If you had the opportunity to cut the amount of synthetics and toxins your family consumes, would you take it?

If you had the power to boost you and your family's immune systems, would you?

If you could care for your family's everyday health needs, and provide real comfort when they are sick, would you do it?

The answers are obvious, and through the use of medical-grade essential oils I am meeting the challenge. I am so excited about what I learn from using doTERRA's essential oils that I want to share my experiences with you. Join the Daily doTERRA blog and explore how the use of essential oils can boost the health and vitality of your family. Here's to a happy and healthy 2012!

Power of Diffusion

It is definitely newsworthy when the medical community embraces alternative therapy. In 2010 Vanderbilt Hospital ER conducted their own study on the effectiveness of diffused essential oils --specifically doTERRA's Wild Orange, Lemon, Lime and Citrus Bliss -- in reducing anxiety and stress in hospital employees. The results are dramatic!

How do I replicate this at home? When my kids a particularily anxious about something at school, I put a couple of drops of their favorite EO on a cotton ball or a small piece of cotton that they can take with them to school and discreetly pull out to smell.  At home I place 8 drops of On Guard, Lavender, or Purify in a small spray bottle and spritz bed sheets, rugs and in the air.

I did purchase the diffuser that is shown in the video, and cannot wait to use it! I will let you know how it works.

Diffusing EOs can:
  • reduce and even eliminate bacteria, fungus, molds that cause unpleasant odors
  • relax the body, relieving tension and clearing the mind
  • improve concentration and alertness
  • relieve headaches
  • uplift mood

Essential oils that multi-task

One of the wonderful things about essential oils is how versatile they are.  This time last year I talked about the effectiveness of the essential oil blend Breathe in easing the symptoms of my children’s colds. (see Kids and Colds) My husband tried Breath recently, hoping for some relief from sinus congestion. Not only did he have a better night sleep than he expected, his calf muscles were relaxed.
This may not seem like much, but to someone who has suffered from tight calves and plantar fasciitis for two years, so much so he had given up running, being able to get out of bed without having to hobble to the bathroom was just shy of fabulous.  Now it makes sense that Breath would have that kind of affect – two of the essential oils in the blend are peppermint and eucalyptus, both of which are commonly used to ease sore muscles…more on that later.
And don’t think essential oils are only for nighttime.  I layered Breath and Peppermint on my kids before they headed to the bus this morning. An added bonus with peppermint – it is well-known that aromas play a big role in stimulating memory and providing a mental energy boost. I just put a drop of Peppermint on my girls’ wrists so they can have easy access to a little aromatherapy.

Purify!

As a native New Yorker, (NOT the City) January means crisp, bone-cold nights and days of falling snow. As a mom of 2 school-age children, January means colds, sniffles and coughs. It is the time for me to go into high gear to rid the house of germs.   And now I have the tool to do just that. One of my top 5 oils is Purify, a cleansing blend of essential oils including Lemon, Lime, Pine, Citronella, Melaleuca and Cilantro. I love the purifying smell, and I love knowing it is truly cleaning surfaces and the air of viruses, bacteria, microbes and other nasty stuff.
Here are my top daily uses for Purify:
1.       Put 9-10 drops in an 8 oz. spray bottle filled with water. Use to clean kitchen and bathroom counters;
2.       4 drops into the washing machine and all the clothes come out smelling positively fresh. Even the kids’ stinky socks smell like a cool breeze;
3.       I use a Dyson bagless vacuum cleaner. I put 3 drops on a tissue and place the tissue in the canister.  As I sweep, the Purify aroma is released.
4.       Wash hardwood floors with a solution of vinegar, water and 10-15 drops of Purify. The essential oil cuts the vinegar smell and my house smells so fresh and clean.
5.       Place a drop on a bug bite to stop the itch and begin healing.
6.       For ear pain, put a drop on the bone behind the ear. Purify along with Melaleuca helps prevent ear infections.
7.       I replaced the sterilizing agent in my medicine cabinet with Purify.
8.       Diffuse to kill airborne pathogens

Keep the Flu Bug Away

Area hospitals are reporting the first cases of the seasonal flu. That is great motivation for making a deliberate, and DAILY, effort to boost the immune system and keep the flu bug out of the house.  Using 3 of my favorite doTERRA essential oils, On Guard, Purify and Lemon, I am not only strengthening my body’s immune system , I am decreasing my family's exposure to airborne pathogens, thus eliminating germs.
1. After brushing, I drop 3-4 drops of OnGuard in a small cup or shot glass of water. Then gargle, swish, and swallow.

2. Drink at least 32 ounces of water during the day with 1-2 drops of lemon per 8 oz of water (this builds the immune system and helps the body rid itself of toxins).

3. Wipe down surfaces in living area's using a spray bottle with 10 drops of Purify to every 8 oz of water.

4. Rub 2 drops of OnGuard on the bottoms of my feet before putting on my shoes (safe for young and old alike and very effective).

5. Diffuse OnGuard or another essential oil that eliminates air-borne bacteria throughout the house.

6. Spritz my pillow with an essential oil before bed time.

7. Begin a flu protocol the moment I feel any cold and flu symptoms. (Flu protocol, a.k.a. “the Bomb” will be tomorrow’s post)

8. Eat well, take extra vitamin D, and get plenty of sleep.

Tired, over-worked feet

Summer is a brutal time for our feet. On top of the general pounding we give them during our work-outs, standing all day at work and running errands, we then insist on walking around in unsupportive flip flops. I don’t even want to think about the surfaces our feet touch.
For me, tired feet quickly lead to tighter calves and charley horses. Last night in the wee hours of the morning I could feel a cramp forming along the bottom of my foot. So I grabbed cypress and eucalyptus and massaged a few drops along the base of my foot. Aaaahhhhh! It worked like a charm, releasing the cramp. My mom and sister have used eucalyptus alone and it has worked just as well. It also prevents the morning soreness one often feels after getting a charley horse.
A couple of times a week I like to reward my feet with a peppermint rub. Take a few drops of peppermint and rub it all over the foot, especially in between the toes – the skin in there is not as tough and calloused. Pull on a pair of socks and head out for the day. Within the hour it feels as if there is an air-conditioner blowing on your feet. In fact, this morning before heading out for a work-out, I rubbed on peppermint.  About 30 minutes into the work-out my feet got the biggest boost of soothing cold. That was at 6:30 this morning and I still feel the coolness at 8:30.  The rest of me will be sore tonight – but my feet will feel great!

Frankincense II - A Parent's Relief

When our kids are sick and in pain, we as parents hope that what we give them makes them feel better.  We hope we are making a difference, and we hope we are truly helping. In my sister’s case, hope became relief and joy.
In my last blog I wrote of my 15-month-old niece’s first experience with frankincense.  It was my youngest sister, Beth, now living in Portland, who introduced us to doTERRA, and was kind enough to come to the east coast this week to share her knowledge on the benefits of essential oils, holding several talks in the MD/VA area.  When Beth arrived she intuitively started applying frankincense to the baby’s ears -- 3 times a day for 5 days.  Oh, that baby smelled good.
Last week the doctor had seen the baby’s ears and had said they were filled with fluid and infected. “When you speak to her, make sure to speak loudly and clearly so she can hear all the sounds – vowels and consonants.  She’s hearing through a thick bubble, right now,” said the doctor. They were going to have to wait a month before an appointment was available to put tubes in her ears. And while she was on antibiotics for the last several months, because the ears would not drain, the fluid would simply get re-infected.
This morning I received a call from the baby’s mom – my other sister -- who gushed, “I just came back from the doctors and my baby girl has no fluid and no infection in her ears! This is the first time in months she has had no fluid in her ears!”  What relief!  My faith in the strength and power of these amazing oils grows.

Frankincense -- one story of many

It’s a common conversation starter among those of us who use essential oils – “If you were stuck on a desert island, what 3 oils would you have with you?”  Only 3?! As of this weekend, I’ve changed my 3, adding FRANKINCENSE to the short list. A call from my sister with another oil story finalized the decision.  Her 15-month-old twins have suffered ear infections from the start. The ENT doctor concluded they should get tubes in their ears, but it will be another month before it can be scheduled. In the meantime, both twins have ear infections and are on antibiotics -- again.  Both are clearly uncomfortable and not feeling well, and baby girl was particularly fitful last evening.
Aunt Beth, the oil expert of the family, had just arrived for a visit, and while the older boys lavished her with hugs and kisses, baby girl had not warmed up to ‘the newcomer’ as she had not seen her in a few months. Baby girl sat on the floor, fussing and rubbing her head and ear. So Beth reached over and gently put two drops of FRANKINCENSE around baby girl’s ear – on the bone behind the ear, under the ear and along the outside of the ear (never in the ear canal).  Within a couple of minutes, baby girl looked at Beth with an expression of complete relief and put her head in Beth’s lap.  Little ones might not be able to tell us in words how they feel, but they certainly know how to get their point across.
By the way, my other 2 are On Guard and Peppermint.
